A new concise insight into how we can improve our collective action through new forms of collaboration, governance, ownership, and value distribution. While decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) can be part of this, we adopt a broader perspective on collective action with this initiative.

Joint client ownership

A short story: I grew up in a neighbourhood with community commons like a shared swimming pool, a shared tennis court and parks and pools. All residents knew, when they bought a house, that they had to pay their share for operations and maintenance. I had a great youth. Swimming together with friends and playing tennis with my brothers.

Recently the swimming pool, changing rooms and showers needed replacement. This couldn’t be done by the residents themselves, as they always did for small jobs. So, they had to organize themselves into a joint client ownership. Not an easy task with around 800 residents. They had to share information and gather individual preferences. They had to arrive at a single set of requirements and reach agreement on the design for a new facility. They had to find a contractor, conclude a contract, and supervise the construction.    

The key issues here are: information sharing, joint decision-making, and being a ‘good’ joint client towards the contractor.
