A new concise insight into how we can improve our collective action through new forms of collaboration, governance, ownership, and value distribution. While decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) can be part of this, we adopt a broader perspective on collective action with this initiative.

Successful multi-stakeholder collaboration

The gain is in the ecosystem. Improvements and successes must increasingly be sought in better cooperation between the parties involved. It is not enough to implement more efficient processes within your silo. A taxi driver can only drive as fast as his car can and is allowed. The gain in terms of customer service is the travel: good connections between carriers, short waiting time and fit-for-purpose services along the way. 

If not driven by customer expectations, parties can be forced to collaborate by legislation. The value chain for fashion is an example. EU laws and regulation prescribe that sellers can prove the provenance of their used materials. And whether these materials are produced in a socially and ecologically responsible manner.

Better customer service and being compliant to laws and regulations in a value chain can only be achieved by collaboration. So collaboration is a the root of improvements and success.

The core question is therefore: how do you shape collaboration in an environment with multiple parties? How do you manage differing interests and achieve a common goal? Without exposing competitive advantages or weaknesses?

It’s about creating trust, sharing information and joint decision-making. Not an easy job.

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) - Mechanisms/tools

DAO-mechanisms/tools can strengthen collaboration. By creating a single shared source of truth for example. For travel use cases this should have the passenger, his location and his preferences at the center. For fashion use cases the garment and the used materials should be the shared focus. Tooling for joint decision-making is another DAO-mechanism that can turn a multi-stakeholder collaboration into a success for all.
