The dividing line between permissionless and permissioned isn’t always clear. Some remarks: • An aspiring member can be put on a waiting list. This does not per se mean that a community is permissioned. It can be about its capacity to serve. • Permissionless doesn’t mean all members have the same rights. • Even communities which call themselves permissionless, may have some on-boarding criteria like KYC (Know Your Customer) controls. • When to call someone a member? Many organizations these days recon their customers to be part of their community… • In web3 ‘permissionless’ is often also about ‘anonymity’.
We define business transactions (TXs) as: A formalized process in which one or more parties exchange data and/or value, resulting in a measurable outcome—or added value—for those parties. Unlike a social interaction, a transaction involves a defined transfer of resources (goods, services, currency, tokens, or information) under agreed terms, often recorded for accountability and potential enforcement.
We define interactions (IXs) as: The reciprocal, ongoing process in which individuals or groups communicate, respond, and influence each other, without necessarily involving an exchange of goods, services, or money.
We use the term ‘extractive’ in the meaning of ‘being allowed, as a member, to use generated value outside the community’. We could have used the terms ‘for profit’ and ‘not for profit’. With the term ‘non-extractive’ we want to emphasize that non-extractive communities use generated value inside their own community. This way members and the community as a whole benefit from their own achievements.
